Karner Blue Capital specializes in environmental impact investing, with a particular focus on biodiversity. The firm launched its first SMA strategies in 2018, and its flagship mutual fund, the Karner Blue Biodiversity Impact Fund, debuted in 2019.
The Karner Blue Capital team includes both industry-specific analysts, doing academic research, and CFAs on a fundamental management team. They start with a social and governance overlay, then look at 16 industries with "significant dependencies on nature." Their investment philosophy is that companies that better manage their impact on nature are going to perform better for shareholders.
The boutique's namesake is the Karner blue butterfly, which president Vicki Benjamin describes as having been brought back from the brink of extinction "as the result of the collaborative efforts of multiple stakeholders- NGOs, private citizens, scientists and governmental agencies."
