Background:

After working at ProShares, BlackRock, and Direxion, Matt Bielski founded his own ETF shop, Defiance ETFs, in 2018 in New York City, though the firm later moved to Miami. In 2022, Bielski stepped down as Defiance ETFs' CEO, while remaining CEO of the fund firm's parent, Defiance Group Holdings (DGH).
Defiance is a thematic ETF specialist that started off focused on offering investors passive ways to invest in disruptive technology. The firm has offered its own ETFs and subadvised ETFs for Tidal.
The firm's name was inspired by the 2008 film Defiance, a true story about two Jewish brothers resisting the Nazis in Belarus in World War II. One of those brothers was Bielski's grandfather.
