In January 2012, Boston Advisorsrevealed that the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic service organization and insurance company, had taken a 19.9-percent stake in the RIA. As part of the deal, Boston Advisors will manage some assets for the Knights and their charity, general account and pension fund.
Boston Advisors launched its first mutual fund, the Broad Allocation Strategy Fund, in January 2011. The RIA first launched the strategy in separate account form two years earlier.
Boston Advisors traces its roots back to 1982 and the founding of Boston Security Counselors. The Advest Group bought BSC in 1984 and changed the RIA's name to Boston Advisors, Inc. Axa bought the Mony Group, Advest's parent, in 2004, then sold Advest to Merrill Lynch. Boston Advisors management then led a buyout from Merrill and transformed Boston Advisors, Inc. into Boston Advisors, LLC, a privately held, majority employee-owned firm in 2006.
