Background:

Merrill Lynch alum Stephen Hammers and American Express Financial Advisors alum David Moore co-founded Brentwood, Tennessee-based Compass in 1996. Compass invests in a basket of exchange-traded funds, using a "rules-based strategic asset allocation methodology" designed to reduce volatility. It launched its first mutual funds at the end of 2008.
Compass now offers three Compass EMP (efficient model portfolios) mutual funds, in A, C and T shares. The youngest, the Alternative Strategies fund, launched December 30, 2009 and boasted $213.3 million as of December 6, 2011. The Multi-Asset Balanced fund boasted $110.7 million, and the Multi-Asset Growth fund had $64.6 million.
