Insurance giant State Farm started its mutual fund business in 1968 and sold it solely to through its insurance agents and to its own employees. Then in 2001, State Farm opened up access to its funds to the public. And in 2003 State Farm launched its target date portfolios and its 529 product.
As of June 30, 2011, State Farm Investment Management Corp. managed more than $13.3 billion in 15 mutual funds and nearly 532,000 accounts. The insurance company distributes the funds through its nationwide network of more than 10,500 agents. State Farm handles the fixed income funds itself, but it relies on outside sub-advisors for its equity work.
