On April 19, 2017, National Life unveiled a deal to sell much of its Sentinel Asset Management mutual fund business to Western & Southern Financial Group's Touchstone Investments subsidiary.
Montpelier, Vermont-based Sentinel Investments' first mutual fund, the large-cap blend Sentinel Common Stock Fund, launched in 1934. Now the National Life Group subsidiary has more than $28 billion in AUM, including $5.4 billion across its 10 mutual funds, as of June 30, 2016. (Sentinel's AUM also includes institutional products.) National Life is a mutually-owned insurance company that traces its roots back to 1848.
Sentinel has used several acquisitions to expands its business. At the end of 2005 Sentinel revealed a deal to buy New York City-based Bramwell Capital Management and it's two funds with $260 million in assets total. And in April 2008 Sentinel completed its acquisition of Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based Citizens Funds, a socially responsible investing (SRI) firm with eight funds and $740 million in assets.
As of June 30, 2016, Sentinel now boasts four fixed income funds, four equity funds, and two asset allocation funds.
