The former investment club started by Robert S. Bacarella in the early 1970s soon became the current Monetta organization. In 1975, the investment club converted to a limited partnership. The advisor registered as an investment advisory firm the same year. The Monetta Fund first launched in 1986 as a no-load mutual fund
Monetta Financial Services launched in December 2006 and has identified several varying philosophies, in comparison to other firms, that continue to contribute to the fund's success. The firm's representatives describe their approach to investment management as "conservative."
Two core goals serve as the driving forces behind Monetta Financial Services: risk control relative to the market and performance consistency relative to the SNP 500 Index. The "core plus" investment approach, which compromises 50-percent of the firm's goal, combines both passive and active management in order to produce high returns with less risk. The reduction of risk in the firm's investment approach allows the firm to focus on decreasing long-term risk and maintain an expense ratio of 1-percent.
Performance consistency, meaning low turnover and a capped expense ratio, is viewed by the firm over a 3-5 year period. The primary objection when considering performance consistency is how often does the firm beat the index. Typically, 6-percent of firms are successful annually.
Monetta Financial Services values beating the index, and in doing so, they have separated themselves from their competitors. But to do so, 50-percent of the firm's time goes into tracking the SNP 500 index, while 40-percent goes into keeping on pace with the capture minimum and the remaining 10% goes into outlining "best of breed" companies that may experience long term success.
"Best of breed" is calculated through earnings totals and revenue stability. Alpha generated returns also play a role in Monetta's of "best of breed" selection process. If a firm is able to experience a 5-7 -percent growth over a set period of time, they can be classified as "best of breed."
Monetta offers four mutual funds: the aforementioned Monetta Fund, the Young Investor Fund, the Mid-Cap Equity Fund, and the Orion/Monetta Intermediate Bond Fund.
