On October 3, 2016, Henderson and Denver-based Janus [profile] unveiled a "merger of equals." The deal closed in late May 2017.
On June 30, 2014, Henderson unveiled a deal to buy $6.3-billion Geneva Capital Management, a Milwaukee-based, institutional asset manager specializing in growth equity.
Henderson Global Investors was founded in London in 1934 to administer the estates of Alexander Henderson, the first Lord Faringdon. The firm went public in 1983 on the London Stock Exchange. Today, Henderson is still headquartered in London, but has a corporate office in Chicago and outposts in Hartford, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Vienna, Zurich, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Singapore.
Henderson's 1992 acquisition of Touche Remnant from Société Générale marked the firm as the UK's leading investment trust manager. In March 1998 , Henderson was acquired by Australian giant Australian Mutual Provident, and was soon integrated with AMP Asset Management as Henderson Global Investors. But in December 2003, AMP's Australian and UK businesses split and Henderson became a part of the new UK holding company HHG PLC. The holding company was renamed Henderson Group in April 2005; it is still Henderson Global Investors' parent company.
Henderson launched its first mutual funds in August, 2001. Today, the firm manages nine funds, including the European Focus, Global Equity Income, Global Opportunities, Global Technology, International Opportunities, Japan-Asia Focus, Money Market, and Worldwide Income funds. Managing director Andrew Formica, a 10-year Henderson veteran, has headed up the firm since November 2008.
In April 2010, Henderson confirmed weeks worth of rumors that it was in talks to acquire a chunk of Suntrust's Atlanta-based RidgeWorth Capital Management.
