  • Background:
In February, 2015, Houston-based Salient Partners unveiled a deal to buy Forward. The deal closed in June, and Salient is keeping both brands for now.

Billionaire Gordon Getty, son of oil baron Paul Getty, founded San Francisco-based Webster Investment Management. In 2001 the manager of managers re-branded itself as Forward Management to be consistent with its fund family's brand, Forward Funds.

As of April 2011, Forward offers more than 30 mutual funds across multiple asset classes, with $5.08 billion in non-money-market assets according to Morningstar, 32.9 percent in load shares and 67.1 percent no-load shares. Its lineup include alternative strategy mutual funds, asset allocation funds, core funds, fixed income funds, international funds, a money market fund, real estate funds and small cap funds, all sub-advised or funds of funds. Forward's funds each offer as many as five share classes: A, C, M, Investor and Institutional.

Its sub-advisors include: Acadian Asset Management, BlackRock, Broadmark Asset Management, Cedar Ridge Partners, Conestoga Capital Advisors, Emerald Mutual Fund Advisers, First Western Investment Management, Hoover Investment Management, Lazard Asset Management, Los Angeles Capital Management and Equity Research, Netols Asset Management, Pimco, Pictet Asset Management, Riverbridge Partners, Smith Asset Management Group and SW Asset Management.

In recent years, Forward CEO and co-founder Alan Reid has aggressively built the firm out through acquisitions. In 2003 Forward signed a letter of intent to buy a minority stake in one of its sub-advisors, Uniplan Real Estate Advisors and then adopted two funds from Pictet, keeping the firm on as sub-advisor. Then in 2008 Forward unveiled a deal to buy Seattle-based Accessor Capital Management, gaining a suite of lifestyle (i.e. target-risk) asset allocation funds. (Forward re-branded Accessor's funds in 2010.) And in 2009 Forward bought Kensington Investment Group's Kensington Funds and a minority stake in another sub-advisor, Broadmark.
