The First Investors family of mutual funds is sponsored by Foresters Finanacial which acquired the funds in September 2010 when it purchased First Investors Consolidated Corporation. Forester Financial is a Canadian insurance company dating to its roots as a fraternal benefit society created in 1874.
First Investors' predecessor company, Financial Independence Founders, was founded in 1930. The firm changed its name to First Investors Corporation in 1948. It founded its mutual fund arm, First Investors Management Company, twenty years later.
As of December 2016, FIMCO has about $11.4 billion across variable annuity subaccounts and 34 mutual funds, managed by about 25 investment professionals in-house and half a dozen outside subadvisors. Though the funds are primarily distributed by FIMCO's own captive sales force, over the last several years the firm has been building out a wholesale distribution effort, too.
