Background:
|
Forrest Birchard Tweedy founded Tweedy & Co. in 1920. The firm's initial focus on undervalued securities reflected Tweedy's background in closely held and inactively traded securities. Tweedy, Browne evolved from a market maker to an investor and ultimately, an investment advisor, aided in part by the relationship between Benjamin Graham and the original partners of Tweedy, Browne. Through Graham, the firm was able to forge brokerage relationships with famed investment figures Walter Schloss, Warren Buffett, and Tom Knapp. Knapp eventually joined Tweedy, Browne in 1957 and facilitated the firm's shift from broker to investor. In 1959, the firm's partners pooled their capital in a partnership investment vehicle and beginning in 1968, accepted external money management clients as limited partners. In 1975, Tweedy, Browne registered with the SEC as an investment advisor and began managing separate accounts for individuals and institutions.
In October 1997, AMG acquired a 71 percent stake in Tweedy, Browne for $300 million in cash.
Other owners include its four managing directors, William Browne, Thomas Shrager, John Spears, and Robert Wyckoff, Jr.
Tweedy, Browne has only had 11 principals in its history.
