This family-run firm was founded in 1911 by St. Denis J. Villere, and it has been operated continuously by his family for four generations. St. Denis J. Villere & Company (Villere & Co. for short) launched its first mutual fund in 1999, and its second debuted in 2013. The firm lays claim to being the first independent mutual fund shop in New Orleans.
The Villere (rhymes with "Hillary") team focuses on investing in companies (mostly small and mid-caps) that have some kind of "defensible franchise," in the words of Villere PM George Young. They use an active, concentrated portfolio strategy and look for companies (sometimes overlooked ones) with sustainable growth and reasonable valuations.
In addition to its two mutual funds, Villere also has a direct advisory business for institutional investors and wealthy individuals, with a minimum account size of $1 million.
