Background:

Huntington, New York-based Rational Advisors' majority owner is Jerry Szilagyi, who also runs Catalyst Funds [profile].
On September 9, 2015, Szilagyi revealed plans to buy Huntington Asset Advisors from Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Bank while Federated Investors [profile] revealed plans to buy Huntington's money market mutual fund business. As part of the Catalyst deal, which closed at the beginning of 2016, Catalyst took over five Huntington mutual funds, two variable annuities, and two Strategy Shares ETFs. And for the Federated deal, two Huntington money funds were reorganized into Federated ones.
Szilagyi rebranded Huntington Asset Advisors as Rational Advisors, and he rebranded the Huntington Funds as the Rational Funds. (The ETFs kept the Strategy Shares name.)
Huntington Asset Advisors and its associates started managing money in 1917. Huntington Funds traces its roots to the launch of the first Monitor fund, the Monitor Money Market Fund, in June 1987. Monitor launched 10 more funds over the next decade, before becoming Huntington Funds in November 1999.
Huntington Funds also had a back-office sibling, Huntington Asset Services, Inc. (HASi, formerly Unified Fund Services, founded in 1952), which the bank took over in 2006 [see website]. The Indianapolis-based mutual fund service solutions firm offered fund firms a number of services, including fund accounting, administration, compliance, custody, distribution and transfer agency. Huntington re-branded the back office unit in August 2010, after anointing Brian Blomquist as the new Unified Fund Services chief in February of the same year. Yet Huntington Bank sold HASi at the end of 2015.
