On June 30, 2014, OM Asset Management (the holding company for Old Mutual's U.S.-based asset management arm, filed an S-1 with the SEC to begin its IPO process.
Old Mutual was founded as an insurance company in South Africa in 1845. It demutualized and listed on the London Stock Exchange and the JSE Securities Exchange in 1999. Old Mutual is now based in London.
The insurer entered the United States mutual fund market in September 2000 with the purchased of United Asset Management (UAM), a Boston-based holding company with stakes in money managers, in a deal valued at more than $2.2 billion ($1.46 billion cash and $769 million assumed debt).
That deal included Pilgrim Baxter & Associates Inc., advisor to the PBHG Funds. Old Mutual extended the PBHG Funds brand to all of its U.S. mutual fund products following the deal. The brand was changed to Old Mutual Funds after PBHG founders Gary Pilgrim and Harold Baxter settled charges brought by the SEC[1] that they had allowed improper trading in funds they oversaw.
