A Janus Henderson Star Begins His Swan Song

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

After more than a quarter century with the company, a Janus Henderson Investors [profile] star is preparing to ride off into the sunset.

Marc Pinto
Janus Henderson Investors
Vice President, Portfolio Manager
Yesterday George Maris, co-head of equities, confirmed that Marc Pinto will retire from the company (and the mutual fund industry) on April 2, 2021. He is a PM on the $17.53-billion Janus Henderson Balanced Fund and on the $4.94-billion Janus Growth and Income Fund.

Craig Siegenthaler, a Credit Suisse analyst who follows Janus Henderson, notes that the Balanced Fund "is consistently the largest net flow contributor for the firm and ranks top decile over 3 and 5Ys." Combined (and not counting SMAs or other vehicles powered by the same strategies), the Balanced and Growth and Income funds represent about eight percent of Janus Henderson' $294.4 billion in AUM.

Jeremiah Buckley
Janus Henderson Investors
Portfolio Manager
Jeremiah Buckley — who PMs the Growth and Income Fund alongside Pinto and who PMs the Balanced Fund alongside Pinto, Michael Keough, and Greg Wilensky — will succeed Pinto. And David Chung, industrials sector lead and research analyst on the centralized research team, rose to assistant PM on the two funds, effective yesterday.

David Chung
Janus Henderson Investors
Assistant Portfolio Manager
Maris lauds Pinto for helping "shape the culture of the firm over the past 26 years."

"I speak for the entire firm when I say his experience, leadership and friendship will be missed," Maris states. "We look forward to keeping in close contact with him and his family as he embarks on the next chapter."

Maris predicts, "given the lengthy transition period, ... a seamless evolution" as Pinto passes the reins to Buckley.

Pinto, an alumnus of Harvard Business School and of Yale University, joined Janus in 1994 (well before the merger with Henderson). Before that he worked at Goldman Sachs, and he started his career at Alger.

Buckley, an alumnus of Dartmouth College, joined Janus in 1998 (also before the Henderson merger) as analyst before shifting to the PM side years later.

Chung, an alumnus of Harvard Business School and Duke University, was a summer analyst at Janus before joining the firm in 2009. Prior to that he worked with Grand-Jean Capital Management and Cornerstone Research.
