It's always good when a fund firm finds a nice wholesaler to start a relationship with.

In this case, Seattle-based Smead Capital has hired Peter Bates to serve as vice president of sales for the East Coast.

Bates was previously with Lord Abbett

The firm is still growing and is looking at internal and external candidates with the hopes of hiring at least two more wholesalers.

In the last year the firm has gone from a staff of 5 to 9, mostly in sales. Peter Bates makes the 9th hire.

“We see immense opportunity for our business with our mutual fund. We are actively hiring people to build out our sales group to serve the platforms that we work with. We look for talented individuals to fill the needs we have to brand our large-cap equity product. Our hires are coming from everywhere from the biggest money management firms down to respected boutiques. We’d expect to hire another 3 or 4 professionals in the near future,” said Cole Smead, Managing Director.
