Some traders are pointing to leveraged ETFs as the reason behind the wild market swings in the final hour of trading,
report The Wall Street Journal's Tom Lauricella, Susan Pulliam and Diya Gullapalli.
Will Weinstein, chairman of
Conifer Securities, said trading linked to ETFs is the "primary source of volatility in stocks covered by these levered ETFs by a lot." He went on to say that such funds are "making an already unstable environment much, much worse."
On the ETF industry side, the article contains comments from
ProShares CEO
Michael Sapir, who noted that "all transactions in the marketplace have an impact." Sapir said the notion that leveraged ETFs is the reason for end-of-day ups and downs is "utter postulation."
