Burglars stole two laptop computers from the Kansas City offices of
American Century, reported the
Kansas City Star.
The burglary took place on April 6 around 4:30 a.m., reported the Star. The intruders entered through a broken window and stole the computers from two offices on the first floor. The building is located at One Main Plaza, 4435 Main Street and is across the street from the headquarter buildings of American Century.
One of the laptops had information such as phone numbers, Social Security numbers, addresses, and account numbers and balances for 10,000 customers, reported the Star. In response to the burglary, the fund firm sent 10,600 letters out to customers in the mail, informing each customer of the specific customer data breached. Approximately 30 percent of the customers’ Social Security numbers were affected, a spokesman told the Star.
American Century representatives will request additional information from affected customers that call in for information about their account. The fund firm said that 400 customers had called about the incident.
