Amidst the daily bad news delivered about the fund industry there is a ray of normalcy as this week Morningstar conducted its annual rite of nominating fund manager of the year candidates.
The good news is there is not a scandal-plagued name among them. Indeed, the five managers for the Stock Fund Manager of the Year award all hail from shops that make a point of staying squeaky clean.
Managers from Vanguard, Bridgeway, and Dodge & Cox managers made that cut. The 2004 nominees include:
John Montgomery of Bridgeway Funds,
Rob Lyon and the rest of the equity team at Dodge & Cox,
The domestic equity team managing ICAP Select Equity,
Richard Freeman of Smith Barney Aggressive Growth,
Howard Schow, Theo Kolokotrones, and Joel Fried of Vanguard Primecap
d fund.
On the fixed-income side Morningstar nominated:
Fidelity's municipal bond team
Pioneer's Margie Patel
Western Asset's bond team
FPA's Bob Rodriguez
MetWest's Kane, Landmann, and Rivelle
