Champ joined
Kirkland & Ellis LLP's New York office as a partner.
Jeffrey Hammes, chairman of Kirkland's global management executive committee, and
John O'Neill, partner in Kirkland's New York office,
confirm that Champ joins the law firm's private funds group, which works with hedge funds, private equity, and real estate investing. The firm has more than 1,600 attorneys around the world.
Champ previously spent fives year at the SEC, most recently
rising to director of the SEC's investment management division before
leaving the regulatory agency a year ago. More recently he
served as a guest lecturer at Harvard Law, and he's been
writing a book about his work at the SEC.
At Kirkland, Champ joins the 100-plus attorneys in the private funds group. That group includes the investment management practice, which focuses on alternatives, broker-dealers, commodity pool operators, commodity trading advisors, financial services mergers and acquisitions, hedge funds, investment advisors, spinouts, and mutual funds.
"I'll be focused on two areas," Champ tells
MFWire, "one, helping firms understand the various policy proposals that are out there ... and two, helping firms comply with all the different rules and regulations, helping firms operate in this highly regulated environment."
Champ describes working with Kirkland as an "opportunity to join an outstanding group of lawyers with just a tremendous practice." He looks forward to "the opportunity to work with lots of clients and look at all sorts of issues."
An alumnus of Princeton, the University of London, and Harvard Law, Champ spent nearly 11 years at Chilton Investment Company before joining the SEC. Prior his work at Chilton, Camp worked at Davis Polk & Wardwell and clerked for Charles Haight of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
