The Hartford has named
Thomas Marra to the position of president at its Life Company. He assumes this position from
Lon Smith who is retiring at the end of the year after holding the post since 1989. Smith will step down as vice chairman and member of the board of directors, but he will continue to be a member of the board of directors for the firm-sponsored mutual funds.
Marra will continue his role as coo as well. He has been with The Hartford since 1980. In 1989, he became a vice president for annuities.
"Lon has done an incredible job of growing Hartford Life into the third- largest life insurance group in the nation from 23rd just 10 years ago. His ability to identify financial and insurance trends and dedicate resources to develop innovative products and services has earned the company market-leading positions in annuities, group disability, life insurance and retirement plans," stated
Ramani Ayer, chairman and ceo at the firm.
"With Tom at the helm, Hartford Life has been the top seller of annuities in the nation for eight consecutive years. He led the development of The Hartford's mutual funds, which became the fastest growing non-proprietary retail fund family in the nation, and the successful introduction of the company into the 401k market," added Smith.
