BlackRock Taps a 30-Year Merrill Vet to its Board

by: Armie Margaret Lee

BlackRock named Dan Sontag, president of Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management, to its board, bringing the number of directors to 16.

Sontag, 52, fills one of the seats vacated by John Thain and Greg Fleming, both of whom left Bank of America shortly after the bank completed its purchase of Merrill Lynch. The other seat was filled by Brian Moynihan, president of global banking and wealth management at Bank of America.

Under BlackRock's stockholder agreement with Merrill Lynch, the latter may appoint two directors to BlackRock's board. Bank of America's acquisition of Merrill closed in January.

Sontag joined Merrill Lynch as a financial consultant in 1978.
