AllianceBernstein Names Sanders' Successor

News summary by MFWire's editors

AllianceBernstein hired Peter Kraus, a Goldman Sachs veteran who had a brief stint at Merrill Lynch this year, as its new chairman and CEO, succeeding Lew Sanders, who is retiring after 40 years at the New York investment manager. Sanders has served as CEO since July 2003 and chairman since January 2005.

Kraus, 56, was most recently head of global strategy at Merrill Lynch, which he joined in September, a few weeks before Merrill decided to sell itself to Bank of America. In an October article, The Wall Street Journal reported that the terms of his contract changed because of the takeover, triggering payment of as much as $25 million.

Prior to his stint at Merrill, Kraus spent 22 years at Goldman Sachs, including seven as co-head of its investment management business. Earlier, he was an audit partner at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co.

The changing of the guard at AllianceBernstein comes amid a tough year for asset managers, which are seeing revenues take a hit as the decline in capital markets take a toll on AUM. In October, AllianceBernstein announced a 39 percent drop in third quarter net income, to $64.6 billion, and said it was cutting an unspecified number of jobs. The company did not state which divisions were affected by the layoffs.
