On April 20, 2017, Raymond James made a deal with UMB to purchase Scout Investments and Reams Asset Management. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year. The firms will join RayJay's asset management subsidiary, Carillon Tower Advisors, which already has has three affiliates — Eagle Asset Management, ClariVest Asset Management, and Cougar Global Investments.
UMB became one of the first banks to offer a line of no-load funds when it entered the mutual fund business in 1982. That year, it launched the UMB Scout Stock Fund, the UMB Scout Bond Fund, the UMB Scout Money Market Fund, and the UMB Scout Tax-free Money Market Fund.
In 2001, UMB formed Scout Investment Advisors to serve as the fund family's investment advisor.
In April of 2009, Scout Investment Advisors sealed a deal to buy the investment advisory business of TrendStar Advisors.
In June 2009, UMB Financial restructured its asset management business, making Scout a subsidiary of the holding company rather than a subsidiary of UMB Bank. The reorganization also resulted in the creation of a new subsidiary, Scout Distributors LLC. Along with those changes, the UMB Scout Mutual fund family was rebranded Scout Funds.
Scout in August 2009 hired Benjamin Wiesenfeld as chief compliance officer and chief legal counsel, and in November, it promoted promoted
chief investment officer Bill Greiner to president. Grenier left Scout in March 2012.
In August 2010, Scout named Andrew Iseman as CEO.
In September of that year, the firm unveiled a deal to purchase Reams Asset Management, an institutional fixed income manager. The deal closed in December.
At the end of 2010, Scout Investment Advisors rebranded to Scout Investments.
On January 25, 2011, Scout announced it was acquiring two mutual funds from Frontegra Asset Management. Reams, which Scout bought in 2010, is the sub-advisor to those funds. The acquisition became complete on April 25, 2011.
Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Scout offers both equity and fixed income investments.
