The asset manager now known as American Century was founded by the late Jim Stowers on October 31, 1958, with two funds and three employees. Stowers had $100,000 in seed money from 24 investors.
The Kansas firm was first known for its growth stock picking prowess, the firm diversified in the 1990s with the purchase of Benham Funds, a specialized fixed income shop. The firm rebranded to American Century before the millennium. Stowers passed away in March, 2014. Jonathan Thomas has been leading the firm as President and CEO since 2007.
In 2019, American Century launched a new unit, Avantis Investors, led by Eduardo Repetto (former co-CEO of DFA) and Pat Keating (also a DFA veteran).
Unlike most asset managers, American Century is only partly for-profit. More than 40 percent of the fund firm's profits go to the firm's controlling shareholder, the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. (Since the institute opened in 2000, the firm has sent it nearly $2 billion.)
Meanwhile, Japanese multinational Nomura bought a noncontrolling, 41-percent stake in American Century in 2016 for about $1 billion. That stake had been owned by Toronto-based CIBC< since 2011, when it was purchased from J.P. Morgan Chase.
