In October 2022, Principal Financial Group rebranded its asset management business under a new name: "Principal Asset Management."
Principal Global Investors (dba Principal Asset Management) is the asset management arm of a publicly traded insurance giant, Principal Financial Group.
Des Moines, Iowa-based Principal Financial Group got its start in 1879 when Edward Temple formed Bankers Life Association to provide life insurance for bankers and their employees. The firm changed its name to Principal Financial Group in 1985 to reflect the new financial areas the company was beginning to enter.
Principal went international in 1990, first opening an office in Madrid, Spain. Outposts in Argentina, Brazil, China, Chile, Hong Kong, India, and Mexico soon followed. Principal now has operations in London and Malaysia as well. In 2001, Principal IPOed and became a publicly traded company.
Principal launched its first fund, the Equity Income Fund, in May 1939. Today, Principal offers several dozen funds in a range of sectors including Target-Risk, Target-Date, large U.S. equity, small/mid U.S. equity, international equity, specialty, fixed income, and short-term fixed income. Principal AM has 14 investment teams.
In December 2006, Principal completed the purchase of Washington Mutual's mutual fund subsidiary WM Advisors, Inc. for $740 million in cash. The WM Advisors funds were integrated into Principal's funds.
