On March 1, 2021, Morgan Stanley, a publicly traded investment bank, closed on its planned acquisition of Eaton Vance.
One of the oldest investment management firms in the country,Eaton Vance traces its roots to 1924, when Charles F. Eaton Jr.and John Howard founded Eaton and Howard. It wouldlater be acquired by fellow Boston-based Vance, Sanders & Company, which was founded byHenry Vance and David Sanders in 1944 and became a publicly traded company in 1959. Vance, Sanders purchased Eaton and Howard in 1979 and the combinedfirm became known as Eaton & Howard, Vance Sanders Inc.
These days Eaton Vance Investment Managers runs a wide array of mutual funds, including domestic equity, global/international equity, tax managed equity, taxable income, tax-advantaged/municipal income-international, and municipal income-state funds.
In October 2011, Eaton Vance launched a wholly owned subsidiary called Navigate Fund Solutions, later re-branded as NextShares Solutions. Navigate is working on commercializing net asset value (NAV)-based trading of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and developing exchange-traded managed funds, branded NextShares.
