Week of February 8, 1998
Friday, February 13, 1998. CNNfn. At 5:45 p.m. Eastern Standard time, Stacy Schaus of Hewitt Associates appeared on the cable financial news program to answer questions on 401(k)'s. She offered four points for participants to follow. She advised that participants enter their plans (21% of potential participants still have not done so), that they keep track of their asset allocation, that they keep their assets when they move (60% of participants when they change jobs take their assets in cash and spend it), and that they become Internet savvy.
Wednesday, February 11, 1998. The Wall Street Journal. In "Employer Stock May Be Risky for Nest Egg", Vanessa O'Connell and Pui-Wing Tam write that up to 33% of 401(k) assets can be in employer stock at companies that offer their own stock as investment options. The article advises that no more than 10% of an individual's investments should be in company stock in case something should happen to that company. The authors also note that frequently companies make it difficult for participants to diversify and that individual stocks often lag behind the market in general.
Tuesday, February 10, 1998. The Cincinnati Enquirer. Kym Liebler in "Future Recipients Don't Feel Secure" reports on the cynicism many in Generation-X feel regarding Social Security's ability to pay back what members of this generation have put in. The author warns that once baby boomers start to retire in 2015 there will be a drain on the system. She also notes that there is some talk in the government and financial sectors to reform Social Security.
Tuesday, February 10, 1998. The Wall Street Journal. In the column entitled "Work Week", the paper reports on William M. Mercer survey that stated that the average number of investment choices open to participants has from 3.5 in 1990 to 8.2 today.
Monday, February 9, 1998. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Stories about allegedly high fees in 401(k) plans continue to circulate in the popular press. According to an article entitled "Just a Percent or Two can Eat 401(k) Profits", participants should be wary of paying fees to providers in excess of 1%. The author warns that fees of 3% or even 2% can eat away at an individual's profits. The piece also warns that sponsors and participants should not think a plan "cheap" if recordkeeping is free because there could be undisclosed high management fees.
Monday, February 9, 1998. Houston Chronicle. Wall Street Journal columnist Ellen E. Schultz's article on Cigna's disagreement with a defined contribution educator at U.S. Kobe Steel has reappeared in The Houston Chronicle entitled "Teach Your 401(k) Students Well? Maybe Not/ Fund Companies Recoil at Fees Discussion".

For Tuesday, February 10, 1998
You may have read last Friday's Wall Street Journal article on the case of Cigna and the financial advisor hired by a union at U.S. Kobe Steel. According to the story, Cigna sent a letter to Tama McAleese, a financial advisor hired by a union at Kobe Steel, warning her that she might be "confused" about the plan's expenses after she told union members in her seminars that the fees may be "high". As Paul Harvey might say, though, there is more to the story than appeared in the Journal...
