The Global ETF Industry Is On a 6-Year Roll

It's been a big six years for fundsters in the ETF and ETP side of the business.

Debbie Fuhr, managing partner at ETFGI, recently revealed that the U.S. ETF and ETP industry brought in $82.44 billion in net inflows in May 2025, up by $19.54 billion month-over-month from April 2025 but down by $8.13 billion year-over-year from May 2024. The U.S. accounted for 69.7 percent of May 2025 worldwide ETF and ETP inflows of $118.34 billion (which were down by $38.69 billion M/M and down by $7.98 billion Y/Y). May 2025 extended the U.S. inflows streak to 37 months and counting, while extending the worldwide streak to 72 months (6 years).

In the first five months of 2025, U.S. ETFs and ETPs brought in a record $443.34 billion in net inflows, surpassing the prior record (from the first five months of 2021) by $44.24 billion and up by $85.17 billion Y/Y. Year-to-date as of May 31, 2025, the U.S. accounts for 60 percent of record worldwide YTD inflows of $738.88 billion (which were up by $144.69 billion compared with the first five months of 2024).

U.S. ETFs and ETPs held a combined record of $11.04 trillion in AUM on May 31, 2025, up by $310 billion from the prior record on January 31, 2025, up by $580 billion M/M, and up by $2.04 trillion Y/Y. The U.S. now accounts for 67.9 percent of record worldwide ETF and ETP AUM of$16.27 trillion on May 31, 2025 (up by $770 billion from the prior record on February 28, 2025, up by $830 billion M/M, and up by $3.38 trillion Y/Y.

As of May 31, 2025, the U.S. asset management industry offered 4,234 ETFs and ETPs, up by 37 (0.9 percent) M/M and up by 703 (19.9 percent) Y/Y. The U.S. now accounts for 29.9 percent of the 14,183 ETFs and ETPs worldwide. (The global count is up by 170 M/M and up by 1,860 Y/Y.)

391 ETF and ETP providers operated in the U.S. as of May 31, 2025, up by 4 (1 percent) M/M and up by 61 (18.5 percent) Y/Y. U.S. ETFs and ETP providers now account for 45.3 percent of the 864 ETF and ETP providers worldwide. (The worldwide count is up by 6 M/M and up by 112 Y/Y.)
