After Two Decades With Wellington, a Partner Departs

by: Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

A Wellington Management [profile] partner who PMs two outside mutual funds will leave the company this summer.

Mario Abularach
Hartford Funds
Senior Managing Director
A recent filing from Hartford Funds [profile] confirms that Jamie Rome "will be withdrawing from the partnership of Boston-based Wellington Management Group LLP" on June 30. Rome is a PM on both the Hartford Small Company Fund and the VantagePoint Discovery Fund [profile] and he serves as a senior vice president, partner, and PM for Wellington's emerging companies team.

A spokeswoman for Wellington declined to comment on Rome's planned departure, citing company policy against talking to the press on Wellington's personnel or the partnership.

A spokeswoman for Washington, D.C.-based ICMA-RC, which offers the VantagePoint funds, declined to comment on Rome's impending move.

Steven Angeli
Hartford Funds
Senior Managing Director
Vern Meyer, chief investment officer for Radnor, Pennsylvania-based Hartford Funds, offered MFWire the following emailed comment:

Steven C. Angeli, the longest tenured portfolio manager overseeing the vast majority of assets for the Hartford Small Company Fund, will continue to serve as portfolio manager. We have full confidence in the fund's ability to continue to create value for our investors.

Wellington is the sole subadvisor for the three-star, $1.1-billion Hartford Small Company Fund. The fund launched in 1996, and Rome has PMed the fund since 2010. Hartford's filing confirms that Wellington's own Mario Abularach (SVP, partner, equity research analyst, and member of Wellington's growth opportunities team), Steven Angeli (SVP, partner, equity PM and co-lead of Wellington's growth opportunities team, mentioned above by Hartford's Meyer), Mammen Chally (VP, equity PM), and Stephen Mortimer (SVP, partner, equity PM, and member of the Wellington's capital appreciation and growth opportunities teams) will continue to PM the fund. Though Rome is not leaving Wellington until June 30, his departure from the fund is effective immediately.

Wellington and Payden & Rygel are the two subadvisors for the three-star, $452.4-million VantagePoint Discovery Fund. Rome has PMed the fund since it launched in 2007. On the Wellington side, Daniel Fitzpatrick (VP and equity research analyst) is another PM on the fund.

Another filing confirms that Rome first joined Wellington in 1994.
