The bell tolled for about 1,000 traditional mutual funds and exchange-traded funds in 2012, according to Chuck Jaffe of MarketWatch. And he draws some lessons from these liquidated or merged funds.

Jaffe delves into tales of some of the financially departed, including the Yieldquest Total Return Bond; the Autopilot Managed Growth; all 15 of the FocusShare Morningstar ETFs; the Global X Food; the AdvisorShares Dent Tactical ETF; the Thunderstorm Value; the Bennett Moderate and Bennett Aggressive Growth, as well as the Pearl Total Return and Pearl Aggressive Growth funds.
