Steinberg Chops Down Three WisdomTree ETFs

Reported by Tommy Fernandez

And the ETF winnowing continues. WisdomTree Asset Management [profile] will close three of its ETFs.

All three of the funds are tiny, ranging in size from less than $5 million to $15 million in AUM. The small size is a hint that the ETFs failed to catch on with investors. WisdomTree executives were not immediately available for comment on the move, but it is likely that the small size played a role.

Two of the ETFs follow currencies while one tracks a "classic" stock strategy.

The ETFs that will shut down are: WisdomTree LargeCap Growth Fund ($14.3 million AUM); WisdomTree Dreyfus South African Rand Fund ($4.5 million AUM) and WisdomTree Dreyfus Japanese Yen Fund ($6.6 million AUM).

The move by CEO Jonathan Steinberg's team follows a number of other ETF closures over the past few months. For example, in September, Global X announced that it would close four such products.

Meanwhile, Russell Investments [profile] announced its plans to close 25 funds in August.
