Leuthold Hires a Wirehouse Alum to Reach B-Ds

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

The Leuthold Group [profile] just brought in a broker-dealer veteran to handle relationships with B-Ds. Today the Minneapolis-based asset manager, one of the backers of Leuthold Weeden Capital Management and its tactical-allocation-focused Leuthold Funds, revealed the addition of Ben Mitchell as a managing director.

"We anticipate a busy 2012, not only on the portfolio management side -- where we continue to navigate one of the most difficult markets in memory -- but also on the distribution side," stated Jeff Leadholm, co-CEO of the Leuthold Group. "In this environment of choppy markets and low yields, many investors are interested in our flexible, tactical-allocation investment approach."

Mitchell previously covered the South and Mid-Atlantic as a vice president and regional wealth management consultant for RBC. He also served as national sales director for Smith Barney Consulting Group, after working at Morgan Stanley.

Leuthold now manages more than $3.3 billion in assets.

Company Press Release

Minneapolis, February 3, 2012 – The Leuthold Group, which manages mutual funds, separate accounts and is well-known for its institutional research business, has named Ben Mitchell as a Managing Director.

In his capacity as a Managing Director, Ben Mitchell will primarily focus on The Leuthold Group’s relationships with brokerage houses in addition to working with independent advisors and other intermediaries on a more limited basis.

Said Jeff Leadholm, Co-CEO of The Leuthold Group, “We’re thrilled to welcome Ben, who is an exceptional addition to our team.  Ben brings deep experience to the job. We anticipate a busy 2012, not only on the portfolio management side—where we continue to navigate one of the most difficult markets in memory—but also on the distribution side. In this environment of choppy markets and low yields, many investors are interested in our flexible, tactical-allocation investment approach.”

Ben Mitchell previously served as Vice President and Regional Wealth Management Consultant at RBC, covering the southern and mid-Atlantic regions.  Ben’s past experience also includes long tenures at Morgan Stanley and then Smith Barney, where he was Senior Vice President and National Sales Director for Smith Barney Consulting Group, based in New York.  Ben earned an MBA from Texas Christian University and previously graduated with a B.S. in Finance from Brigham Young University. He is a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) and carries various NASD securities licenses.

The Leuthold Funds are best known for tactical allocation funds, both domestic and international. Three funds—Leuthold Asset Allocation Fund, Leuthold Core Investment Fund, and Leuthold Global Fund—are often referred to as providing “go-anywhere” hedge-fund-like investment profiles to mutual fund investors.
