More Than 12,000 People Were Affected By a Cali Fund Firm Breach

The team at a publicly traded, Bay Area fund firm is publicly revealing a data breach they suffered last ear.

Folks with Hennessy Advisors, Inc. (HNNA) [profile], informed regulators last week that they were hit by a breach last spring. The Novato, California-based asset manager's team notified the Office of the Maine Attorney General on February 24, the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation on February 24, the Office of the Attorney General in California on February 24, and the Attorney General of Texas on February 25, of a data breach incident. Per the Maine filing, 12,643 individuals were affected by this data breach, which took place on March 30, 2025.

Lindsey Smith, partner at Constangy, Brooks, Smith, & Prophete LLP, did not immediately return a phone call and an email for comment. Terry Nilsen, president and COO of Hennessy Advisors, Inc., and EVP and treasurer of Hennessy Funds, declined to comment.

Per the Maine filing, the 12,643 affected individuals included 48 Maine residents affected by this data breach. Per the Massachusetts filing, those affected also included 346 Massachusetts, and per the Texas filing, those affected also included 729 Texas residents. Per the Massachusetts filing, exposed information included social security numbers, financial account, and driver's license information.

The Hennessy team is offering affected individuals identity theft protection services through IDX, according to a notification letter.
