A Global X Co-Founder Preps a 22-Fund Family

Near New York City, one of Global X's co-founders is building a family of nearly two dozen thematic ETFs.

Today, the team behind the new Themes ETF Trust filed to create 22 ETFs. Greenwich, Connecticut-based Themes Management Company, LLC will serve as the investment advisor to all of the planned funds, and Jose Gonzalez-Navarro (president of Themes) and Calvin Tsang (head of U.S. product management and development for Themes) will PM the funds. No expense ratios, tickers, or launch dates have been revealed, nor have they officially chosen an independent accounting firm to service the funds.

16 of the planned funds will use Solactive AG as their index provider. Those 16 funds are:

  • the Themes Airline ETF, tracking the Solactive Airlines Index;
  • the Themes China Technology ETF, tracking the Solactive China Technology Index;
  • the Themes Cloud Computing ETF, tracking the Solactive Cloud Computing Index;
  • the Themes Cybersecurity ETF, tracking the Solactive Cyber Security Index;
  • the Themes European Luxury ETF, tracking the Solactive European Luxury Index;
  • the Themes Future of Farming ETF, tracking the Solactive Smart Farming and Agriscience Index;
  • the Themes Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF, tracking the Solactive Generative Artificial Intelligence Index;
  • the Themes Gold Miners ETF, tracking the Solactive Global Pure Gold Miners Index;
  • the Themes Natural Monopoly ETF, tracking the Solactive Natural Monopoly Index;
  • the Themes Renewable Energy ETF, tracking the Solactive Renewable Energy Index;
  • the Themes Robotics & Automation ETF, tracking the Solactive Industrial Robotics & Automation Index;
  • the Themes Semiconductors ETF, tracking the Solactive Semiconductor Index;
  • the Themes US Cash Flow Champions ETF, tracking the Solactive US Cash Flow Champions Index;
  • the Themes US Internet ETF, tracking the Solactive US Internet Index;
  • the Themes US R&D Champions ETF, tracking the Solactive US R&D Champions Index; and
  • the Themes US Small Cap Cash Flow Champions ETF, tracking the Solactive US Small Cap Cash Flow Champions Index.


  • Five of Themes' planned ETFs will use STOXX Ltd. as their index provider. Those five funds are:
  • the Themes Industry 4.0 ETF, tracking the STOXX Global Industry 4.0 Index;
  • the Themes Junior Gold Miners ETF, tracking the STOXX Global Junior Gold Miners Index;
  • the Themes Silver Miners ETF, tracking the STOXX Global Silver Mining Index;
  • the Themes Solar Energy ETF, tracking the STOXX Global Solar Energy Index; and
  • the Themes Wind Energy ETF, tracking the STOXX Global Wind Energy Index.


  • The last planned ETF, the Themes Global Systemically Important Banks ETF, will be actively managed.

    The planned ETFs' other service providers will include: ALPS Distributors, Inc. as distributor and principal underwriter; Practus LLP as counsel; U.S. Bancorp Fund Services, LLC (dba U.S. Bank Global Fund Services) as administrator, index receipt agent, securities lending agent, and transfer agent; and U.S. Bank, National Association as custodian.

    Gonzalez-Navarro has been with Leverage Shares since 2018. Prior to that, he spent 10 years with Global X, where he served as chief innovation officer prior to its 2018 sale. He is also founder and CEO of FlexFunds, a fund accounting and administration firm, and co-founder and CEO of Leverage Shares, a European ETF shop. He is an alumnus of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid.

    Prior to joining Leverage Shares in January, Tsang held portfolio manager positions at Cboe Vest and QS Investors. Earlier, he worked at ProShares and Haver Analytics. He is an alumnus of Binghampton University.
