Week In Preview: ICI GMM and More

Paul Schott Stevens and his team are bringing fundsters back to Washington, D.C. this week for ICI's 59th annual flagship annual conference, and AIMSE, Envestnet, Gerstein, IMCA, and the PSCA are also holding events.

Fundsters will converge for the Investment Company Institute's 2017 GMM (General Membership Meeting) at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in D.C., and Goldmans Sachs Mutual Funds president and CEO James McNamara (chairman of the trade group's GMM planning committee) will kick things off Wednesday afternoon.

Other speakers scheduled to take the main stage at the 2017 ICI GMM include: Iam Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group; Eli Broverman, cofounder of Betterment; Kelly Coffey, CEO of the U.S. private bank at J.P. Morgan; Darrell Cronk, president of the Wells Fargo Investment Institute and chief investment officer for wealth and investment management at Wells Fargo; Gregory Davis, principal and global head of fixed income at Vanguard; Gregg Fisher, founder and head of quantitative research and portfolio strategy at Gerstein Fisher; Martin Gilberg, CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management; Ben Huneke, managing director and head of investment solutions at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management; Jeff Immelt, chairman and CEO of GE; Thomas Jones, head of strategic relations at Columbia Threadneedle; Marie Knowles independent director for Fidelity's fixed income and asset allocation funds; Heather Lord, senior vice president and head of strategy and innovation at Capital Group; Stanley McChrystal, retired U.S. Army general; Heather Miner, global head of strategic advisory solutions at Goldman Sachs Asset Management; Paul Nicklen, wildlife photojournalist; Stuart Parker, president of PGIM Investments (formerly Prudential Investments); David Semaya, executive chairman of Nikko Asset Management; Lisa Shalett, head of investment and portfolio strategies at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management; Sonnia Shields, executive director and head of diversity at J.P. Morgan Asset Management; Shundrawn Thomas, executive vice president and head of funds and managed accounts group at Brown Brothers Harriman; and of course Paul Schott Stevens, president and CEO of the ICI.

The three-day conference also includes separate tracks for: compliance; fund directors; legal; and operations and technology. Big sponsors of the ICI GMM this year include: Deloitte; DST; FIS; J.P. More than 2,000 people are expected for the three-day event geared towards the Chicago-based, publicly-traded TAMP's allies, including bank and trust companies, independent broker-dealers, and RIAs. Pre-conference sessions start today.

Speakers scheduled to take the main stage this week at the Envestnet summit include: Jud Bergman, chairman and CEO of Envestnet; Bill Crager, president of Envestnet; David Gergen, former White House advisor and current Harvard professor; Jim Harbaugh, former NFL quarterback; and Garry Kasparov, world chess champion. Big sponsors of the Envestnet summit include: Capital Group's American Funds, TIAA's Nuveen, and Russell Investments.

Yesterday the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA) team kicked off their 2017 Annual Conference Experience (ACE) at the San Diego Convention Center. The four-day conference's main sessions begin today and will feature remarks from: Jonah Berger, professor at the Wharton School at UPenn; Rana Foorhar, associate editor of the Financial Times; Toby Moskowitz, professor of finance at Yale; Jim O'Shaughnessy, chairman, CEO, and chief investment officer of O'Shaughnessy Asset Management; Michael Sandel, professor at Harvard; and Sherry Turkle, professor at MIT's initiative on technology and self. MetLife's Brighthouse Financial, Invesco PowerShares, and Select Sector SPDRs are sponsoring the IMCA conference.

Also yesterday, the Association of Investment Management Sales Executives (AIMSE) team kicked the 40th annual marketing and sales conference at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Arizona. The three-day conference began with a golf tournament and will feature remarks from: Filippo Bartolotta, the "grape trotter"; Buddy Bush of JB Training; Michael Manning, partner at NEPC; Noel O'Neill, head of global investment research at Cambridge Assocaites; Gio Valiante, golf psychologist; and Chris Rae, president of AIMSE. Callan, Evestment, MandateWire, Pensions & Investments, and Style Research are sponsoring the AIMSE conference.

Meanwhile, tonight in New York City, Gregg Fisher's Big Apple-based fund firm, Gerstein Fisher (a subsidiary of People's United Bank), is hosting one of its Real Talks events. The event, titled "the Future of America, in Context," will take place in midtown at the Times Center and will feature remarks from historians Robert Gordon and David Moss
