Only at
Vanguard [
profile] can you manage $800 billion without being famous at your own company.
| Gerry O'Reilly Vanguard Principal, Portfolio Manager | |
Ben Steverman of
Bloomberg interviews Gerry O'Reilly, age 52, and also offers a glimpse into what portfolio management and trading are like for a passive investment management team. O'Reilly PMs the $450-billion
Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund, the biggest mutual fund in the world, in addition to 17 other funds.
Others who chimed in for the piece include:
Joe Brennan, head of Vanguard's equity index group;
Ryan Ludt, co-head of U.S. equity trading at Vanguard; and
Brian Bruce, CEO of
Hillcrest Asset Management.
Among other interesting tidbits, the
Bloomberg article reveals that "Vanguard doesn't separate the jobs of portfolio manager and trader." And O'Reilly reportedly says that it's "a good thing" that he, in
Bloomberg's words, "barely attracts attention" on the Vanguard campus in Malvern, Pennsylvania.
