Northern Lights: You Need to Think More About Distribution

Reported by Tommy Fernandez

Northern Lights Distributors wants you to think more about distribution, a lot more.

The executives at the firm are trying to come up with as many venues and vehicles to get people to talk on the subject.

For example, NLD launched in July a Distribution 101 curriculum to educate fundsters on the fundamentals on the subject and to spur discussion. It expanded the curriculum earlier this month.

"We want to be known as a firm that managers can reach out to for ideas and insights that are freely shared and that they know will be happy to take their call and discuss distribution," NLD distribution manager Jon Poyer recently told MFWire.

Poyer had this to say on the subject of market need for this curriculum and venue:
NLD prides itself on being consultative and providing ideas and solutions for mutual fund distribution.  We have found that by educating the marketplace on best practices and sharing insights into what successful firms are doing, it raises the quality of sales teams and helps them to be better partners with the firms and advisors that they are distributing to.  This educational series is meant to be a resource for clients, partners, and the industry in general to help them organize their sales and better provide solutions to meet the investing needs of the community.

We have found that a lot of managers get so busy in their day-to-day activities that they forget about the benefits of organizing and preparing their structure – thus, they are not able to capitalize on distribution as they should.  Not to mention, it is oftentimes structure that sets certain firms apart as it certainly is easier for an advisor and platform to work with a firm that is organized, prepared, and detail-oriented.  The types of insights that our educational series is meant to address.  Not to mention, we love talking about distribution.
Poyer said that he and his colleagues are using this curriculum to drum up as much dialogue as possible on the subject.

"Our folks at NLD talk distribution daily – whether by communicating with our clients, industry partners, or distribution platforms – so we are constantly looking for new ideas, hearing about new ideas, and sharing new ideas.  This Distribution 101 idea will be on our website and the content will be offered through articles and other thought leadership mediums; not to mention through our daily interactions with managers," he said.

Poyer said that "the end goal is for people to think about NLD when they are talking about distribution and hopefully they will use these resources and ideas in their planning or strategy conversations around sales, marketing, and business development.  We are happy to engage in conversations and share as much information as is appropriate with all comers as it only makes us better. "
