Michael Aronstein and executives from Calamos [profile] and TFS Capital [profile] will be toasting Morningstar tonight. For the first time the mutual fund ratings agency will name an alternatives fund manager of year, and today alternative fund research director Nadia Papagiannis revealed the first batch of nominees.

Those nominees are:

• -Aronstein, PM of the five-star, bronze-rated, $4.1-billion MainStay Marketfield Fund [profile] [New York Life's MainStay adopted the MarketField Fund in October];
  
  
• -the team behind the four-star, bronze-rated $2.5-billion Calamos Market Neutral Income Fund; and
  
  
• -the team behind the five-star, gold-rated, $1.8-billion TFS Market Neutral Fund.

M* has already revealed fund manager of the year nominees for the international stock, fixed income and domestic stock categories.
