A New Fund Firm Spreads Its White Wings

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

An alternative fixed income manager just entered the mutual fund business. Today Atlanta-based Angel Oak Capital Advisors launched its Angel Oak Multi Strategy Income Fund (ANGLX) [see prospectus]. The MFWire.com first reported on the launch news in February.

Angel Oak analyst Clayton Triick explained the launch in terms of the changing demand for investments tied to asset-based securities.

"Appetite has come back, and with rates being so low there's not a lot of opportunity for investors to find income outside of the alternative asset classes," Triick told The MFWire.com. "There was an opportunity to fill that gap."

As for launching more mutual funds, Triick said that "it's not out of the question," but Angel Oak has no such plans for the near future.

The new fund comes in a single share class, for 239 basis points in annual expenses and a 575-bps front-end load. Ashish Negandhi and managing partner Brad Friedlander PM the fund, with Friedlander on point. Triick confirmed that the fund is "currently available on TD Ameritrade," as well as direct, and he anticipates gaining more platform distribution soon.

Huntington serves as the new fund's accountant, custodian and transfer agent, and Huntington subsidiary Unified Financial Services handles distribution. The John H. Lively & Associates provide the fund with legal counsel, and BBD serves as the independent accounting firm.

Founded in 2008, Angel Oak offers hedge funds and managed accounts based on asset-based securities. The firm boasts $200 million in assets under management.

Company Press Release

Atlanta, GA (June 28, 2011) Angel Oak Capital Advisors, LLC (Angel Oak) is pleased to announce the launch of the Angel Oak Multi Strategy Income Fund (The Fund, Ticker: ANGLX). The Fund offers an easier way for individual and professional investors to invest in alternative fixed income instruments. It seeks to achieve high current income while providing less interest rate sensitivity than traditional fixed income assets.

The fund is managed by an Angel Oak team headed by portfolio managers Brad Friedlander and Ashish Negandhi.

"Our strategy initially is to focus on the asset-backed securities market. This asset class has traditionally been available only to hedge fund like structures, so we are excited to be opening a mutual fund that takes advantage of these types of opportunities in the fixed income marketplace," said Friedlander, Angel Oak's managing partner. Even though the initial focus will be on the asset-backed securities market, the Fund's versatility allows the portfolio management team to continuously evaluate relative-value opportunities across all areas of the fixed income market. The advisor's knowledge and expertise enhances its ability to incorporate alternative, structured and traditional fixed income.

"The Fund invests across fixed rate and floating rate securities, in an effort to effectively manage the interest rate risk of the overall portfolio according to our current views on the market," added Friedlander.

Investors can purchase the Fund directly or through TD Ameritrade. More options to purchase the fund will be available over the coming months.
