The relatively new head of the German firm's U.S. distribution business will likely have an opportunity to stamp his vision on the firm when current CEO Joachim Faber retires. Gaffney, a career-long salesman and former distribution chief for Neuberger Berman, understands the U.S. market well.

Still, the separation of Pimco's distribution from Allianz' takes a bite out of the Allianz sales target. How Gaffney fills that hole will be the focus going forward.
