| Joe Mansueto Morningstar Chief Executive Officer | |
At just 28 the starry-eyed
Joe Mansueto published the first
Morningstar newsletter out of his Chicago apartment's living room (there are no garages in Lincoln Park). A quarter century later and Morningstar has grown from a seedling
into a tree worthy of Rockefeller Center's place of honor; Morningstar has sunk its role model (
Value Line) and acquired its erstwhile competitors (
Micropal), with the exception of Lipper.
Mansueto turned over the CEO reins in 1996 only to famously return to the firm in 2000 after the company sailed offcourse after raising a round of capital during the dotcom bubble from Japan's SoftBank. Since that time Morningstar has made buys of fund raters and information gatherers around the world and built out its advisor-focused managed accounts business.
