In an effort to expand its tools for 401(k) managers, Fidelity has released Compensation Planner, a web-based program that streamlines cyclical 401(k) decision making by providing hr/payroll managers with analytical tools, decision support features, budget summaries, and the ability to send recommendations up the corporate ladder.



After much legislative donkeywork, Japan's Upper House is expected to pass today the 401(k) bill approved on June 12th, reports Reuters. The legislation is a major step away from Japan's traditional DB system; officials hope the legislation will reinvigorate Japan's ailing economy. DALBAR has released an update of its original 1994 study of mutual fund cash inflows and outflows to include returns up to the year 2001. The study, currently available to fund companies, concludes that despite the market's recent decline, a buy and hold strategy generates greater long-term returns than a more active trading strategy.



According to Reuters, Morgan Stanley's precipitous earnings drop of 36 percent for the second quarter is largely due to a decline in stock trading revenues and brokerage commissions. Layoffs in the investment management and securities divisions seem to have done the trick; there are no plans for further layoffs.
