As president of fund research at Morningstar, Don Phillips occupies a unique vantage point in the industry. Much has been said about the impact of Morningstar's rating system on fund flows, and with the market upheaval of 2008, the Chicago firm's own star has shone brighter as a source of information for individual investors looking to pick funds amid a changing universe.
Phillips joined Morningstar in 1986 as its first analyst and served as CEO from 1998 to 2000. He created the style box, ownership zone and sector data tools. He also revised the star-rating methodology, and led Morningstar's call for public disclosure of fund manager names, incentives and ownership.
He currently oversees Morningstar's fund and ETF coverage.
