Johnson's post was newly created, according to Third Avenue spokeswoman Bridget Smith. Johnson will oversee a team of eight, focusing on developing Third Avenue's institutional client base.

He was most recently a partner at Grail Partners, responsible for the identification and targeting of capital providers for two private equity funds. Before that, he worked for Schroder Investment Management, Marathon, Martin Currie and Neuberger Berman.

Grail managing partner Don Putnam told The MFWire that Johnson left the firm last week and the parting was "amicable."

May 8, 2009, New York, NY – Third Avenue Management LLC, an investment adviser to private and institutional clients, announced today that Steven Johnson has joined the firm as a Senior Managing Director. Mr. Johnson will be responsible for leading Third Avenue’s sales effort, with a focus on developing Third Avenue’s institutional client base.
