New York Life Lassoes an Ex-Grail Exec

Reported by Armie Margaret Lee

New York Life Investments' president and CEO John Kim brought on board former Grail Partners managing partner John Sicliano for a newly created post. Siciliano, who earlier in his career worked at Dimensional Fund Advisors and Payden & Rygel, joined New York Life on January 5 as senior managing director and head of the firm's investment boutiques.

Grail founder and managing partner Don Putnam will assume Siciliano's former duties at the merchant banking firm, according to Putnam in e-mailed comments to The MFWire.

At New York Life, Siciliano is in charge of the company's five external asset managers: Madison Square Investors LLC, MacKay Shields LLC, McMorgan & Company LLC, New York Life Capital Partners LLC and Institutional Capital LLC.

Prior to Siciliano's arrival, some of those managers reported directly to Kim.

"This is a much more efficient way to deploy our institutional, multi-boutique strategy," New York Life spokesman John Puccio told The MFWire.

At Grail Partners, Siciliano focused on business development and day-to-day management of the firm, which invests and advises in asset management and related financial technology business. He also served as chairman of Grail Advisors, LLC, one of the first active ETF investment advisors.

Previously, he was chairman and CEO of BKF Capital Group, and before that led the global institutional fund business at Dimensional Fund Advisors. Earlier, he was president of Payden & Rygel Investment Group.
