MassMutual Shuts out Galvin

MassMutual seems to be putting up a fight as Secretary of State William Galvin bears down on the company. The company has reportedly refused to give Galvin documents related to the dismissal of ex-CEO Robert O'Connell, including his termination letter and a 59-page report on the matter, reports the Boston Globe. Yet according to the Globe, MassMutual has provided those same documents to other regulators, including Thomas Reilly, the Massachusetts attorney general.

MassMutual is ''not in a position to produce documents in response" to Galvin's document requests, wrote MassMutual attorney Dennis J. Block in a letter to the firm. The letter said MassMutual is working with Reilly on a criminal investigation of the former CEO.

In response, Galvin has subpoenaed the company over the records.

Meanwhile, Reilly upped his involvement in the MassMutual Mystery this week by meeting with MassMutual representatives after people from the company contacted him last week, reports Reuters.

"We are reviewing serious allegations of wrongdoing uncovered by the company," stated Reilly.

State Insurance Commissioner Julianne Bowler is also investigating the company.
