Howard Surloff made a pair of key promotions last month at Russell Investments [profile] as a C-suiter retired.

Peter Mortensen and Susan Verhaar both took on new leadership roles at Russell on June 1, confirms Steve Claiborne, a spokesperson for Russell. Verhaar now serves as senior director, head of operational risk, internal audit, and investment governance, while Mortensen now serves as chief risk officer. The duo reports to Surloff, Russell's chief legal officer.

Also last month, John McMurray, formerly chief risk officer and chief audit executive at Russell, left the company, as previously reported. McMurray retired from Russell on June 1, Claiborne confirms.

Mortensen, an 11-year Russell veteran, most recently served as managing director and head of investment risk. Verhaar, who has spent more than two decades with Russell, most recently served as director of operational risk and investment governance.

Verhaar rejoined Russell back in 2000 and has since worked in governance, product, and risk management roles. Earlier, she worked at Seahirst Financial and Spicer & Oppenheim, and in an earlier Russell stint she served as a senior financial analyst. She is an alumna of Western Washington University.

Mortensen joined Russell in 2012 as an investment risk analyst, and he rose through various risk roles before becoming head of investment risk in 2019. Earlier, he worked with Nykredit and with the Ministry of Finance of Denmark. He is an alumnus twice over of the University of Copenhagen.
