Monday, July 18, 2022 A New Analytics Chief Rises At a $1.82T-AUM Firm A ten-year company veteran has succeeded a seasoned managing director and global head of analytics at a West Coast investing giant with $1.82 trillion in AUM (as of June 30).
Mariappa, who was most recently head of portfolio risk management and served as a generalist portfolio manager, did not return an email for comment. A Pimco spokesperson confirms that Mattu has retired, but remains a consultant to the firm. He has been in the investment industry for forty years. Meanwhile, the Pimco team outlines a few other changes taking place within the company right now, including Qi Wang rising from managing director and portfolio manager to chief investment officer in portfolio implementation, and Josh Davis, managing director, rising to global head of risk management. The Pimco team explains, "Mariappa has 34 years of experience in the investment industry and has served in a number of roles at PIMCO including generalist portfolio manager, senior advisory roles to the PM group and led teams managing global bond strategies. He will work closely with Masoud Sharif, Executive Vice President, Head of Core Risk Analytics, and Marco van Akkeren, Executive Vice President, Head of Desk Quant Analytics." Prior to re-joining Pimco, Mariappa was head of portfolio risk management and a generalist portfolio manager for GLG, a London-based hedge fund. In his previous time with Pimco, he served as managing director and head of global portfolio management. He was also a senior advisor to the Pimco portfolio management group from 2009 to 2011. Before initially joining Pimco in 2000, Mariappa was a managing director for Merrill Lynch Tokyo. He has also held fixed income and derivatives roles with Long Term Capital Management and Salomon Brothers. Mariappa is an alumnus of Cornell University. Before joining Pimco, Mattu was a senior managing director with the Citadel from 2008 to 2010. For seventeen years before that, he was a managing director for Lehman Brothers. From 2006 to 2008 specifically, Mattu served as global head of equity and fixed income research for Lehman Brothers. He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
