The Philadelphia Inquirer highlights the growth of the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund, which could become the first $1-trillion-AUM mutual fund this year. (According to Morningstar, the fund currently has $901.9 billion in AUM. Its sister ETF holds $145.5 billion.)

To put those numbers in perspective, as of the end of December, the entire industry had $20.734 trillion in mutual fund AUM (including ETFs, but excluding money market funds and funds of funds). There were only 29 firms with more than $100 billion each in mutual fund AUM . Of those 29, only four had more than $1 trillion each in mutual fund AUM.
